Background of the Study
Pediatric cardiac arrest, though rare, is a life-threatening emergency that requires prompt and effective intervention to prevent death or long-term neurological damage. The management of pediatric cardiac arrest involves a combination of rapid assessment, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), defibrillation, and advanced cardiovascular life support (ACLS) techniques, all of which require specialized knowledge and skills. Nurses, as part of the healthcare team, play a vital role in the successful management of pediatric cardiac arrest. They are often responsible for initiating and supporting resuscitation efforts, administering medications, and monitoring the child's condition during and after the event.
At the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Owerri, the preparedness of nurses to handle pediatric cardiac arrests is critical in ensuring the best possible outcomes for affected children. However, despite the importance of this preparedness, there has been limited research on the readiness of nurses to manage pediatric cardiac arrest in this healthcare setting. This study will assess the level of preparedness of nurses working at FMC Owerri, evaluating their knowledge, training, and resources available to handle pediatric cardiac arrest situations.
Statement of the Problem
Pediatric cardiac arrest is an emergency that demands swift and skilled intervention. Nurses, who often have direct contact with patients, must be adequately prepared to respond to these situations. However, it is unclear whether nurses at FMC Owerri are sufficiently prepared for pediatric cardiac arrests, which could lead to delays in response, poor outcomes, or unnecessary complications for affected children.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the level of preparedness of nurses in handling pediatric cardiac arrest at FMC Owerri.
2. To evaluate the adequacy of training and resources available to nurses at FMC Owerri in managing pediatric cardiac arrest.
3. To identify the challenges faced by nurses at FMC Owerri in managing pediatric cardiac arrests.
Research Questions
1. What is the level of preparedness of nurses in handling pediatric cardiac arrests at FMC Owerri?
2. Are the training programs and resources provided to nurses at FMC Owerri adequate for managing pediatric cardiac arrest?
3. What challenges do nurses face in managing pediatric cardiac arrests at FMC Owerri?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurses at FMC Owerri have a moderate level of preparedness to handle pediatric cardiac arrest.
2. Training and resources provided to nurses at FMC Owerri are insufficient for effectively managing pediatric cardiac arrest.
3. Challenges such as lack of specialized training, inadequate resources, and time constraints negatively affect nurses' preparedness for managing pediatric cardiac arrests at FMC Owerri.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on nurses working in pediatric emergency care units at FMC Owerri and will assess their preparedness for handling pediatric cardiac arrests. Limitations may include reliance on self-reporting data, and variability in preparedness levels across different nursing units may influence the findings.
Definitions of Terms
• Pediatric Cardiac Arrest: A medical emergency in which a child's heart stops functioning, requiring immediate resuscitation efforts such as CPR or defibrillation.
• Preparedness: The state of readiness among nurses to respond to pediatric cardiac arrest situations, including training, skills, and resources.
• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS): A set of clinical interventions and skills used in the resuscitation of patients experiencing cardiac arrest, which includes defibrillation, airway management, and medication administration.
